Poems - II

Earlier (Poems -  4th October 2015 blog) I had mentioned that they bind the essence of life. Today, I wish to add that poems sum up who we are in two lines they help us to draw courage in times of distress.

Out of two poems,listed below, Invictus by William Earnest Henley, inspires us to take our own decisions. Ulysses by Alfred Lord Tennyson inspires us to be what we are and to accept it, as is and live accordingly. Ulysses was popularized by M in Skyfall (23rd James Bond Movie).

Invictus

Out of the night that covers me,
      Black as the pit from pole to pole,
I thank whatever gods may be
      For my unconquerable soul.

In the fell clutch of circumstance
      I have not winced nor cried aloud.
Under the bludgeonings of chance
      My head is bloody, but unbowed.

Beyond this place of wrath and tears
      Looms but the Horror of the shade,
And yet the menace of the years
      Finds and shall find me unafraid.

It matters not how strait the gate,
      How charged with punishments the scroll,
I am the master of my fate,
      I am the captain of my soul.

Ulysses

It little profits that an idle king,
By this still hearth, among these barren crags,
Match'd with an aged wife, I mete and dole
Unequal laws unto a savage race,
That hoard, and sleep, and feed, and know not me.
I cannot rest from travel: I will drink
Life to the lees: All times I have enjoy'd
Greatly, have suffer'd greatly, both with those
That loved me, and alone, on shore, and when
Thro' scudding drifts the rainy Hyades
Vext the dim sea: I am become a name;
For always roaming with a hungry heart
Much have I seen and known; cities of men
And manners, climates, councils, governments,
Myself not least, but honour'd of them all;
And drunk delight of battle with my peers,
Far on the ringing plains of windy Troy.
I am a part of all that I have met;
Yet all experience is an arch wherethro'
Gleams that untravell'd world whose margin fades
For ever and forever when I move.
How dull it is to pause, to make an end,
To rust unburnish'd, not to shine in use!
As tho' to breathe were life! Life piled on life
Were all too little, and of one to me
Little remains: but every hour is saved
From that eternal silence, something more,
A bringer of new things; and vile it were
For some three suns to store and hoard myself,
And this gray spirit yearning in desire
To follow knowledge like a sinking star,
Beyond the utmost bound of human thought.

         This is my son, mine own Telemachus,
To whom I leave the sceptre and the isle,—
Well-loved of me, discerning to fulfil
This labour, by slow prudence to make mild
A rugged people, and thro' soft degrees
Subdue them to the useful and the good.
Most blameless is he, centred in the sphere
Of common duties, decent not to fail
In offices of tenderness, and pay
Meet adoration to my household gods,
When I am gone. He works his work, I mine.

         There lies the port; the vessel puffs her sail:
There gloom the dark, broad seas. My mariners,
Souls that have toil'd, and wrought, and thought with me—
That ever with a frolic welcome took
The thunder and the sunshine, and opposed
Free hearts, free foreheads—you and I are old;
Old age hath yet his honour and his toil;
Death closes all: but something ere the end,
Some work of noble note, may yet be done,
Not unbecoming men that strove with Gods.
The lights begin to twinkle from the rocks:
The long day wanes: the slow moon climbs: the deep
Moans round with many voices. Come, my friends,
'T is not too late to seek a newer world.
Push off, and sitting well in order smite
The sounding furrows; for my purpose holds
To sail beyond the sunset, and the baths
Of all the western stars, until I die.
It may be that the gulfs will wash us down:
It may be we shall touch the Happy Isles,
And see the great Achilles, whom we knew.
Tho' much is taken, much abides; and tho'
We are not now that strength which in old days
Moved earth and heaven, that which we are, we are;
One equal temper of heroic hearts,
Made weak by time and fate, but strong in will
To strive, to seek, to find, and not to yield.

Pray for Sports

Institutions have great power in moving mountains of work which individuals fail in. So some individuals use this institutional power to move and achieve what they want to.
If the intent is good the impact is powerful. Recently one of the powerful sports body appointed its President. Cricket Body in India selected Mr. Anurag Thakur as its new president. Credentials of Mr. Thakur was mentioned on the Times of India Newspaper (23rd May 2016 , page 18 - Please visit the end of this article for screen shot - Know Thakur), one aspect is worth mentioning below:
The interesting part is the first one “Played one first-class match for Himachal Pradesh as Captain against Jammu and Kashmir in the 2000/2001 season”.
It is surprising that Mr. Thakur was more talented than the likes of Tendulkar, Kohli, Ganguly, Dravid etc.. Since all these players could not become captain of the state team when they played their first first-class match. Any cricket player knows it is impossible as you have to climb up the ladder.
The political background of Mr. Thakur, is impeccable and unquestionable. Every atom is made of Politics.
Now to back up the above statement an interesting article appeared in DNA newspaper titled “The curious case of Anurag Thakur, the Cricketer by Chandra Shekhar Luthra on 4th March 2016. I will reproduce sections of the article here which is very interesting to read :
“Well, there is no dispute over whether Thakur has played cricket at certain level or not. But to actually club him alongside Indian greats can put BCCI in the dock over how the game of cricket is being run by some selfish administrators for their own greed.
Thakur's story is a curious one...
It was soon after becoming president of Himachal Pradesh Cricket Association (HPCA) in June 2000 that he found ways to climb up in the BCCI ladder.
He was only 25 at that time, the youngest to become president of any state cricket association in the country. To be eligible for a post in BCCI's junior selection committee, a plump post in itself, he needed to have been a Ranji Trophy player.
So, one fine day in the month of November, Thakur just walked into the dressing room of Himachal Ranji team and announced himself captain for this match against Jammu & Kashmir.
As it would have happened to any other administrator in India, Thakur got a 'big zero' as batsman but managed to get two late-order wickets.
Cricket in Himachal was hit for a six by the son of state's chief minister Prem Kumar Dhumal. But it didn't matter to BCCI or for that matter to Thakur. It was important for this young upcoming lover of the game to get into the BCCI junior selection panel. The BCCI's rules allow only first-class cricketers to be made national selectors.
With Ranji Trophy certificate under his belt, Thakur went on to become the Indian junior selector in subsequent years and now BCCI has put him alongside some of the Indian cricket greats who are serving the game for the love of it.”
For rest of the article ,  please read the link below provided as references. The article is worth reading.
The point is things do not change at the highest level of power of any institution. We have to remind ourselves:
“We all learn in school that the judicial, legislative and executive branches of government must check and balance each other. But other non state institutions must participate in this important system of checks and balances as well. These checking institutions include the academy, the media, religious institutions and NGOs.” - Alan Dershowitz
We all knew that cricket body in India has been used by politicians to control and exercise their supremacy. I believe today is the culmination of that control and I am sure that it will not stop here but reach to greater heights in future. This reflects the state of sports bodies in India.
The seed for future destruction is sown today.
Pray for sports.

Movie - Jupiter Ascending

Today I watched Jupiter Ascending movie. Best part movie had a Female protagonist unlike other sci-fi movies.

I wish to bring out here some quotes from the movie:

“In your world, people are used to fighting for resources like oil and minerals and land. But when you have access to the vastness of space, you realize, there's only one resource worth fighting over - even killing for. More time. Time is the single most precious commodity in the universe.”

“Life is an act of consumption, Jupiter. To live is to consume and the human beings on your planet are merely a resource waiting to be converted into capital, and this entire enterprise is just a small part in a vast and beautiful machine defined by evolution, designed to a single purpose: to create profit.”
